Every year 1st October is observed as National Voluntary Blood Donation Day to make aware people all over the country about the importance of voluntary blood donation, to successfully achieve the target of voluntary blood donation to fulfill the urgent need of the patients, to store the blood in stock for meeting any urgent need, to promote and emphasize the self esteem of blood donors through a lot of thanks, to motivate healthy people to voluntarily donate blood at regular intervals etc.
This year the day has been observed with the theme ‘Blood donors bring a ray of hope. Be a regular blood donor’. The state inaugural function of the day was conducted at Govt. Arts and Science College, Meenchantha, Kozhikode. Simultaneously various programs were conducted in all districts to motivate the blood donors. Blood donation camps were also organized throughout the State
District Level organizing Committee (DLOC) Meeting:
As a preliminary to the State level Inaugural Function of the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day 2015, scheduled at Kozhikode, DLOC meeting with the participation of line departments, NGOs and other stakeholders was held on 16th September 2015 at the Chamber of Additional District Magistrate , Kozhikode. Representatives from KSACS, District Medical Office, District AIDS Prevention and Control Unit etc attended the meeting. In the meeting various programmes were planned and decided venue for the public function at Govt. Arts & Science College, Kozhikode. Furthermore, the programs are listed here.
A press conference was held on 29-09-2015 at Kozhikode Press Club with the participation of all print and visual media. The Consultant VBD-KSACS, Joint Director (IEC), KSACS and Addl. Dist. Medical Officer (H), Medical officer (I/C) Dept of Transfusion Medicine, Medical College Kozhikode, DAPCU and Dist. Mass Media Officer participated and explained the importance of the day observance.
Human Chain by Higher Secondary Department:
As a token of solidarity to NVBDD a human chain was formed at Manachira square on 30-09-2015 by more than 1000 Higher Secondary School Students from various schools at Kozhikode and took the NVBDD oath. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. K. Narayana Naik, Dist. Medical officer (H) Kozhikode. Printed Helium balloon which carry the messages of NVBDD were blown to the sky by the school students, which was followed by Magic Show to raise awareness on Voluntary Blood Donation.
Proclamation Vehicle and Tableau:
A branded vehicle with announcements on the significance of the day observance and Voluntary Blood Donation went around Kozhikode city along with tableau by RRC-NSS students from Ferook College. The team including a Magician carried out full day performances, especially in focused crowded spots like bus stand and in selected educational campuses.
Announcement at KSRTC bus stand: In association with the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation – Kozhikode Depot, the messages on NVBD 2015 and voluntary blood donation were announced at frequent intervals, using the KSRTC announcement system.
A flash mob raising awareness on VBD performed by students from Providence Women’s College, Kozhikode at the beach on 30-09-2015 evening followed by helium balloon blowing declaring solidarity with Voluntary Blood Donors attracted the attention of general public .The awareness Magic show was also performed in the beach. The Dist. AIDS Control Officer Dr. Jeeja M.P., Sri. Venugopal (Consultant VBD-KSACS), Sri. Sunil Kumar G (Joint Director -IEC),Smt. Suja C.R (DEMO), K.J. Michael ,Dist. Programme Manager – DAPCU Kozhikode and Sadeek Kottackal (ICTC Supervisor) etc participated in the program.
State level Inaugural Function was held on 01-10-2015 at Govt. Arts and Science College Kozhikode. Dr. M.K. Muneer, Hon’ble Minister for Panchayat and Social Justice Inaugurated the public function and Blood Donation camp. The Additional project Director Dr. Sameera A. presided over the meeting and key note address was given by Dr.K. Narayana Naik D.M.O (H) Kozhikode, Dist. AIDS Control Officer Dr. Jeeja M.P. , College Principal Prof. M. Sreenivasan, Dr. A. Baburaj, Dist. Programme Manager NHM, Sri K.J. Michael, Dist. Programme Manager – DAPCU Kozhikode, Sri Ashokan Alapreth, President - Kerala Blood Donors Forum and Student representative Sri. Bidhul E felicitated the function. Sri Sunil Kumar G. Joint Director –IEC, KSACS delivered the welcome speech and the vote of thanks by Sri N. Venugopal, Consultant( VBD)-KSCAS .
In the venue a blood donation camp was organised. Blood Bank teams from Medical College, W&C Hospital and General Hospital together collected 113 blood units, out of this 71 were male donors and 42 females. The students from Zamorins Guruvayoorappan College, Govt. Arts college, Sree Sankaracharaya University and providence Womens college, JDT college, Youth Welfare Board and General public donated blood in the programme.
In recognition of the valuable contribution towards VBD and Blood Safety, One Blood Bank Medical Officer,Blood Bank Counsellor, Staff Nurse,Technician etc were honored by Hon. Minister for Panchayat and Social Justice, by distributing Mementos and Certificates.
After the inaugural session various cultural programmes like skit, drama, light music, group song etc. were performed by students from various colleges such as Zamorins Guruvayoorappan College, Govt. Arts college, Sree Sankaracharaya University, JDT college and providence Women’s college.
Mass media activities at state level
As part of the day observance various mass media activities were organised at State level.
- Message of Sri. V.S.Siva Kumar, Hon Minister for Health and Family Welfare,Govt of Kerala was telecast in Doordarshan and broadcast in All India Radio on 1st Oct.
- Livephone-in program in Doordarshan under Samoohiyadapdm segmant. Dr. Suma, Head of the Department, Transfusion Medicine, Medical College, Kottayam was the subject expert
- Spots were given in 4 major FM radios.
- Spots, jingles and talk show were telecast in All India Radio as part of day branding.
- Quarter page advertisement was given in Mathrubhumi daily to propagate the messages of Blood Donation Day.
- Advertisements were also given in leading health magazines like Vanitha, Arogyam and Grihalekshmi.
